The hidden treasures of Hungary – 1 week

Day 1 – Welcome in Budapest, introduction
Arrive in Budapest and transfer to your downtown hotel. Meet your fellow travelers and your Danube Destinations Tour Director at the hotel for orientation.

Day 2 – Panoramic Tour of Budapest, Szentendre, Danube river cruise
Bus and walking tour to see Pest and Buda including the Heroes’ Square, Opera House, Andrassy Avenue (WHS), St. Stephen Basilica and Parliament. Relaxing walk in the Castle District (WHS) to visit the gothic Matthias Church and for stunning panoramas of the city and river. In the afternoon explore Szentendre, an artist’s settlement with galleries, cobble stone streets and wonderful little shops. Close the day with an evening river cruise on the Danube River. Overnight in Budapest.

Day 3 – Pannonhalma, Herend Porcelain Factory, Tihany Abbey, Lake Balaton
Leave Budapest and travel to Heviz whith stops at several fascinating locations including The Benedictine Arch Abbey of Pannonhalma (WHS), the Herend Porcelain Factory and The Porcelanium, and Tihany, on the northern shores of Lake Balaton. In the evening reach your destination for the night at Hévíz [‘Hot Water’] in Western Hungary.

Day 4 – Keszthely, Pecs
After breakfast a short morning bus ride  will take you to Keszthely and the beautiful Festetics Palace with its well  maintained English-style garden. Continue on to the historic city of Pecs and explore the city’s historic sights on a walking tour, including the Old Town, the Cathedral, the former Turkish Mosque, and the 4th century Christian Basilica (WHS). Accommodation in Pécs.

Day 5 – Authentic Cooking and Horse Show in Lajosmizse, Eger Castle Tour 
Travel to the heart of the Hungarian Great Plains (Puszta). Enjoy an authentic, outdoors “puszta” cooking typical for the region, while listening to live gipsy music. After your hearty meal watch a horse show and marvel at the skills of the Hungarian “cowboys”. Overnight in Eger.

Day 6 – Szilvasvarad, picnic at the Valley of Szalajka, Lillafured, optional evening cave bath visit at Miskolctapolca
Walking tour of the city to explore Dobó Square, the Lyceum, Fortress, and the second largest Cathedral in Hungary. Travel into the Bukk Mountains and take a narrow gauge train through Szalajka Valley, where you can roast your own trout. Move onto Lillafured for our accommodation. Optional evening swim at the thermal cave baths of Miskolctapolca.

Day 7 – Holloko, Budapest 
In the morning we depart for Budapest. On the way we will viisit Holloko (WHS). Once in Budapest you will have free time to explore the city on your own. Gourmet farewell dinner with gipsy music.
