


Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1- Welcome in Budapest
Arrive in Budapest independently and get transferred to your hotel in the beautiful Castle District of Budapest. Relax or take an optional tour in the city in the afternoon. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel where you meet your fellow wine connoisseurs and your tour director. After dinner, walk around the district and enjoy a wonderful view of the city at night.
Day 2 - Panoramic Tour of Budapest and Private Tour of the House of Hungarian Wines
After breakfast at the hotel, we will take a city tour by bus and see the most important sights of Budapest, including Pest and Buda, the vast Heroes’ Square with its impressive Millennial Monument, the historic Gundel restaurant, the magical Opera House on the famed Andrassy Avenue, and the ornate St. Steven Basilica which is the city's largest church and the Parliament. We will walk the cobblestones of the Castle District, visit the Matthias Church, first erected in 1247, and enjoy stunning panoramas of the city and river. During the tour, enjoy your lunch at a restaurant on the Danube promenade with a view of the Hapsburg Citadel and Castle Hill with the Fishermen’s Bastion. In the afternoon we will have a guided private tour and tasting with an English- speaking sommelier at the “House of Hungarian Wines”and taste the best wines of the 22 wine growing regions of Hungary. We will learn about what makes these regions unique and ideal for producing outstanding wines. End the day with dinner in the captivating atmosphere of the district.
Day 3 – Visit the city of Pecs and Villany wine region
Today we will leave Budapest and travel to Villany, the southernmost wine region of Hungary. On the way to Villany, we willstop in the historic city of Pecs for a walking tour to learn about the Old Town, see the Cathedral, visit the former Turkish Mosque, and the 4th century Christian Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After lunch, you will have free time to visit the Zsolnay museum of hand painted porcelain and other interesting sites and intriguing museums. We will continue to a well known winery in Villany for a tasting of their award winning wines and dinner.
Day 4 – Villany and Szekszard wine regions
You will awaken in the small village of Villany at the Bock Inn. Visit the land belonging to the Bock winery (Winemaker of the Year in 1997) and learn about their technology. Taste the prized red varietals specific to this region then travel to Szekszard to the next winery to be discovered. After a tasting in the cellar and winery visit, a gourmet dinner of regional specialties will be waiting for you at the gala room of the chateau. Accommodations are arranged in a 300 year old hunting mansion.
Day 5 – Authentic Cooking and Horse Show in Lajosmizse, Eger Castle Tour and Eger wine region
Today we will travel to the northeastern region of the country by way of Tanyacsarda (Country Inn) in the heart of the Hungarian Great Plains (Puszta). Here a stop for lunch will allow you to enjoy authentic, outdoors “puszta” cooking typical for the region, while listening to live gipsy music. After lunching on Hungarian specialties, we will continue to Eger. Take a walking tour of this lovely baroque city and learn about remarkable monuments including the Dobó Square, the Lyceum and the second largest Cathedral in Hungary. Visit the famous fortress where outnumbered heroic defenders, led by István Dobó, held out against the Turks in their initial attack in 1552. Eger sits at the centre of one of the most famous wine-growing regions in Hungary and is home of the well-known red wine Egri Bikaver (Bull’s Blood).End the day with a cellar tour, wine tasting and dinner at the winery famous for its outstanding wines.
Day 6 – Tokaj wine region and Wine Museum visit
Today we travel to the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tokaj is where the premier dessert wine, the Aszu, is produced among many others. The wines of Tokaj were cherished by European nobles and royals for Centuries. En route stop in Mád to visit the many hundreds of years old cellars and taste the wines of the Royal Tokaji Wine Ltd then follow with lunch of local specialties. In the town of Tokaj, visit the Wine Museum exhibition presenting the history of viniculture with antique instruments and processes. Wine tasting in town, then settle in at a beautiful château for dinner and accommodation.
Day 7 – Travel to Budapest
After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, tourthe winery and enjoy a wine tasting. Departure for Budapest and lunch en route. Before arrival at the hotel in Budapest enjoy a culinary tour of the Market Hall. After check in at your hotel in the Castle District, join the International Wine Festival or enjoy your free afternoon and evening.
Day 8 – Budapest International Wine Festival
Attend the International Wine Festival, choose an optional guided tour or enjoy your free day.
Day 9 – Budapest International Wine Festival
Attend the International Wine Festival, choose an optional guided tour or enjoy your free afternoon. In the early evening, meet at your hotel for your transfer to the restaurant for the farewell dinner. Enjoy a gourmet meal with traditional gipsy tunes at the famed Gundel restaurant. Visited by royalties and celebrities, it is considered one of the finest restaurants in the world.
Day 10 – Departure
Individual transportation to airport arranged by Danube Destinations
